Samuel Bassett was born in West Row in 1882 (Mildenhall Q2-1882 4A:652), son of Philip and Ann BASSETT (née MOODY).
1891 census...Aged 9, he was at The Green, West Row with his widowed mother Ann BASSETT [34] charwoman born Newmarket; brother Manning [6] and sister Martha Ann [3] both born in West Row, and cousin Annie WEBBER, [16], single, born Isleham. His father had just died (reg Mildenhall Q1-1891) 1901 census...Aged 19, a farm labourer, he was at Bedlam Yard, West Row with his mother, brother Manning (farm labourer) and sister Martha. 1911 census...Aged 29, single and now head of family, he was at West Row with his mother and brother Manning. It is recorded that one sibling had died. The pension card has his mother still in West Row. |

Samuel enlisted in West Row. His Army service records have not been found.
The 2nd Suffolks on 1st October 1918 attacked from Between Ribecourt and Marcoing and captured RUMILLY. They captured over 3000 Germans and took several machine guns but at the cost of about 180 casualties. The regiment recorded OR killed 31, wounded 94 and 49 missing. CWGC put the killed at 46. (Lt Barnard previously reported missing was presumed killed) The Bury Free Press of 26th October reported:- WEST ROW DEATHS ...........News has also been received of the death in action of Lance-Corpl Samuel Bassett, son of Mrs. Barrett, a widow, residing in West Row. He joined Kitchener's Army in September 1914 and was in the Suffolk Regiment.
